“You smiled a lot since we came to Thailand”, my gf said.
Why Thailand? Why Chiang Mai?
This is likely my seventh trip to Thailand.
I'm a huge fan of Southeast Asia, Thailand included. There's something about the hot, humid climate that just makes me feel more alive. Plus, living here is way cheaper than in Canada or Japan.
This time around, my main goal in Thailand is to find a community of like-minded people. I used to be a bit skeptical about the whole 'community' hype. But after my experience with buildspace sf1, I've come to really appreciate the value of having a community, especially the kind you can connect with face-to-face, not just remotely.
Post-sf1, I started thinking, "What if I could recreate something similar to that experience?" Knowing that places like Chiang Mai and Bali are hotspots for nomads and indie hackers, I decided to stay in these areas and keep working on my app.
What am I doing in Chiang Mai?
Since “showing up every day” is the most important thing, I come to a co-working space called “Yellow” every day.
A monthly pass is 5990 baht ($164), not so cheap but it's worth the money.
This place is supa cozy.
It opens 24/7, ideal for true builders.
This week I made an MVP for an experimental concept/tech.
Voiceover generator for your videos - You can try it for free!
It adds voiceover to your video.
Here’s a demo.
Many ppl asked me what’s the use case. Tbh I don’t know.|
I just made it since the tech OpenAI announced at Devday was wild and I had to try it.
But some use cases in my mind
product demo voiceover
short content voiceover
I’m gonna try these next week!
Penelope AI
Penelope AI is the product I made for nights & weekends s2 and earned money for the first time from my app, it now has about 14k signups and 400-600 new signups every month.
I haven’t worked on it for the last couple of months, but I’d love to work on it again.
So I made a discord server for it bc I’d love to talk to users.
Let’s see how it goes :)

So cool 🔥 – Chiang Mai is great, spent ~3 months there this year and I felt the Chiang Mai effect :)
Yellow was decent but also so many top tier coffee shops to work from – I've just started organising a few on my site = https://mattspear.co/places, hopefully useful if you are still there!
